UPSC Age Limit

UPSC sets different age limits for each category. First check your category:

  • General Category – 21 to 32 years
  • OBC (Other Backward Class) – 21 to 35 years
  • SC/ST (Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe) – 21 to 37 years
  • EWS (Economically Weaker Section) – 21 to 32 years
  • PwD (Persons with Disabilities) – 21 to 42 years

Important Note: UPSC calculates age based on August 1 of the exam year. This means if you are applying for UPSC 2025, your age must fall within the prescribed limit as of August 1, 2025.

How Many Attempts Are Allowed in the UPSC Exam?

UPSC has not only an age limit but also a maximum attempt limit. This means you get a limited number of chances to clear the exam.

  • General Category – 6 Attempts
  • EWS – 6 Attempts
  • OBC – 9 Attempts
  • SC/ST – Unlimited Attempts (Until Age Limit)
  • PwD (General/EWS/OBC) – 9 Attempts
  • PwD (SC/ST) – Unlimited Attempts

Important Note: If you fill out the Prelims form and appear for the exam, it will be counted as one attempt, even if you do not qualify for the Mains.
